چکیده

Atmospheric concentration measurements of tracers for primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) have been used to obtain estimates of their release into the atmosphere. Emission flux data of surrogate compounds, for which concurrent concentration measurements were available, were used to quantify the release of PBAPs as PM10 mass. Results indicate fungal spores to be the most important contributors. One other main source is plant debris. Area-based emission rates of 24kgkm 2 and year (range 6–90) have been assessed. Results scaled for Europe indicate a contribution of PBAPs to PM10 concentrations in the low percentage range, with a maximum in summer when concentration levels are small. This is consistent with the range of measurements. Despite of the large uncertainties, results contribute to clarify the potential contribution of biological particles to global load of particle mass. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Particle number concentrations over Europe in 2030: the role of emissions and new particle formation

The aerosol particle number concentration is a key parameter when estimating impacts of aerosol particles on climate and human health. We use a three-dimensional chemical transport model with detailed microphysics, PMCAMxUF, to simulate particle number concentrations over Europe in the year 2030, by applying emission scenarios for trace gases and primary aerosols. The scenarios are based on exp...

Modelling of organic aerosols over Europe (2002–2007) using a volatility basis set (VBS) framework: application of different assumptions regarding the formation of secondary organic aerosol

A new organic aerosol module has been implemented into the EMEP chemical transport model. Four different volatility basis set (VBS) schemes have been tested in long-term simulations for Europe, covering the six years 2002–2007. Different assumptions regarding partitioning of primary organic aerosol and aging of primary semi-volatile and intermediate volatility organic carbon (S/IVOC) species an...

Simulating ultrafine particle formation in Europe using a regional CTM: contribution of primary emissions versus secondary formation to aerosol number concentrations

A three-dimensional regional chemical transport model (CTM) with detailed aerosol microphysics, PMCAMx-UF, was applied to the European domain to simulate the contribution of direct emissions and secondary formation to total particle number concentrations during May 2008. PMCAMx-UF uses the Dynamic Model for Aerosol Nucleation and the Two-Moment Aerosol Sectional (TOMAS) algorithm to track both ...

Modeling semivolatile organic aerosol mass emissions from combustion systems.

Experimental measurements of gas-particle partitioning and organic aerosol mass in diluted diesel and wood combustion exhaust are interpreted using a two-component absorptive-partitioning model. The model parameters are determined by fitting the experimental data. The changes in partitioning with dilution of both wood smoke and diesel exhaust can be described by two lumped compounds in roughly ...

Gas-particle partitioning of primary organic aerosol emissions: 3. Biomass burning

[1] Atmospheric organic aerosol concentrations depend in part on the gas-particle partitioning of primary organic aerosol (POA) emissions. Consequently, heating and dilution were used to investigate the volatility of biomass-burning smoke particles from combustion of common North American trees/shrubs/grasses during the third Fire Lab at Missoula Experiment. Fifty to eighty percent of the mass ...
